Host Ken Magos with Chef Melissa Fairchild Clark

What is Drive By History: Eats?

Our spin-off show, DRIVE BY HISTORY: EATS, revisits past episodes from our flagship show, DRIVE BY HISTORY, and delves into the kitchens, cookbooks, and dinner menus of some of our favorite food-loving historical subjects.

Guided by Food and Culture Historian Dr. Libby H. O'Connell,  author of
The American Plate: a culinary history in 100 bites, we recreate recipes with the help of Chefs Melissa Fairchild Clark (Seasons 1 and 2), Leslie Williams Ellis (Season 2) Anthony Murgola (Season 1), and Kelli Solomon (Season 2).

And best of all, we make these recipes available for you to download so you can try them at home!

Meet Our Cast

  • Ken Magos, Host & Co-Executive Producer

Ken brings more than 30 years’ experience as a performer, director, and producer to his multiple roles on this project. His own performance career spans film, television, opera, concert and musical theater throughout the US and abroad.

He received his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Washington, and his Master’s degree in Vocal Performance | Opera from Manhattan School of Music.

Following his corporate career as an infrastructure development specialist working with global clients, he now serves as President of South Mountain TV, a division of South Mountain TheaterWorks, Inc., a theatrical and television production company he founded in 2005.

His passion for history (and a difficult-to-read roadside marker near his home) provided the inspiration for Drive By History and its spin-off show, Drive By History: Eats. His innate curiosity about the people, places, events and food that make up our shared legacy, as well as the experts who keep those stories alive, help to make this show true “destination television.”

Meet Our Chefs

  • Chef Melissa Fairchild Clark

    Melissa Fairchild Clark

What I do revolves around the perimeter of the grocery store during the week, and at farms and the farmers market on weekends. I strongly believe in eating locally, sustainably, within the season, and from the solar food chain rather than the fossil fuel chain. I endeavor to support small farms and local businesses because they’re what creates and sustains community.

I believe in healthy fats, natural sugars, and that all things grown and sustained within 1-2 degrees separation from the sun and the dirt are superfoods. I don’t believe in the low fat, the fat free, the sugar free, the processed-and-packaged, or anything touted as a miracle. I believe that the more color diversity you have on your plate, the better you’re doing at fueling your body. For this reason I also believe that BLT’s in September are buttressed up against nirvana.
